In 1957, the American Peter Viertel, husband of the actress Deborah Kerr, was the first to surf the waves of Biarritz. Known as one of the key surfing locations, Biarritz nowadays attracts surfers from all around the world.

Before that time Biarritz was just small village depending on the fishing industry from the tiny, near natural harbor close to the now famous beach, La Grande Plage, the biggest beach in town.
