Defender and G-wagon in search of remoteness

Camera: Canon EOS 1Ds MKIII

Today we experienced the two opposite sides of luck, - the good and the bad. First we headed up into two different valleys to try to locate some tracks shown on the old IGN maps, lady luck was not with us, on both occasions it turned out to be dead-ends ending in tiny villages, the conclusion must be that what was shown on the maps as dotted lines must be footpaths.

After this defeat, and another turn-around in yet another valley, we made the decision to head east via the tarmac to the town of Assa, here we could top up with fuel, and then we would try our luck north from here. And oh boy did we strike gold, - we located a fantastic narrow and beautiful piste winding it´s way up into the mountains clinging onto some steep hillsides. The track had clearly not seen any vehicle traffic for a very long time, proven by the fact that it was fairly overgrown with wild untouched flowers in the ruts.

After a while it became clear to us why the tracks was so unused; after several kilometers we sadly reached a collapsed bridge, thus bringing our good fortune to a halt. At first we scouted around in the terrain to try to find a possible detour from the track that could lead around the nonexistent bridge. Sadly this was not doable in a truck, - for the first time I wished I was on a motorcycle. After we had digested our defeat and set about to retrace our tracks I actually did not mind this at all. The view was phenomenal, the track narrow and rough and the weather so nice that we could not complain.

We set up camp for the night early, we wanted to save a fair bit of the return-drive on the track to the following morning. Just to prolong this adventure as far as we could.
